Elliot Voss - Astrology, Numerology & Tarot

Dr. Elliot Voss is a British-born astrologer and writer whose work brings together astrology, psychology, and spiritual traditions from different cultures. He is especially interested in how people use the stars, symbols, and ritual practices to better understand themselves and their place in the world. Voss studied anthropology at King’s College London, where he earned his B.A. in 1993, and later completed doctoral work at the University of Edinburgh. His dissertation, Mapping the Celestial Body: Astrology as an Embodied Epistemology in Pre-Modern Europe (1997), explored how astrology has helped people connect their inner experiences with the wider world. Early fieldwork in northern Finland with Sami Noaidi, or traditional ritual specialists, shaped his belief that celestial symbols can affect the body and imagination during trance-based rituals.

From 2002 to 2015, Voss held research roles at the Institute for Archetypal Studies in Zurich and the University of Leiden’s Centre for the History of Hermetic Philosophy. During this period, he studied and observed healing and trance traditions around the world, including Andean mesa ceremony, Siberian drumming rites, and West African divination. His 2012 book, Between the Stars and the Drum: Ritual Technologies of Orientation, brought these experiences together and explored how star-gazing, rhythm, and guided imagination can help people enter altered states for healing, reflection, and personal realignment.

Voss is known for taking astrology and shamanic traditions seriously while presenting them in a thoughtful, grounded way. In articles for Culture and Cosmos and Time and Mind, he argues that these practices should not be dismissed as superstition. Instead, he sees them as symbolic systems that help people make meaning, build connection, and experience the world as alive and responsive. Alongside his academic work, Voss spends much of his time in Boston, Massachusetts, and also maintains a small private practice in Edinburgh. In his consultations, he blends astrology with guided inner journeying and psychological conversation. This practical side of his work inspired his recent book, Charting the Imaginal Field (2020), which looks at how planetary symbols can be used as helpful images during meditation, reflection, and personal healing.

Colleagues often describe Voss as someone who can move comfortably between careful research and spiritual experience. His current work, funded by the European Council for Interdisciplinary Humanities, explores connections between Renaissance astrological medicine and Central Asian healing traditions. Through this research, he presents astrology not as fixed prediction, but as a meaningful way to reflect on the relationship between consciousness, the body, and the wider cosmos.
